MIND CONTROL
TECHNOLOGY
& THE UK

Several U.S. government projects focused on mind control, interrogation, and behavior modification, primarily led by the CIA. The most infamous was Project MKUltra, which had several predecessors and related programs.
Projects like MKUltra include:
- Project CHATTER (1947–1953): Initiated by the U.S. Navy, this was one of the earliest programs to identify and test “truth drugs” for interrogations. It involved laboratory experiments on both animal and human subjects using substances like anabasine, scopolamine, mescaline, and LSD.
- Project BLUEBIRD (1950–1951): Launched by the CIA, this project aimed to develop effective interrogation methods using drugs, hypnosis, and polygraph techniques to prevent operatives from compromising intelligence. The project was renamed the following year.
- Project ARTICHOKE (1951–1953): A successor to Project BLUEBIRD, ARTICHOKE expanded research into whether an individual could be coerced into performing acts against their will, such as an assassination, through the use of drugs (including LSD and morphine), hypnosis, and isolation techniques.
- MKNAOMI: This project focused on maintaining a covert arsenal of biological and chemical warfare materials, including developing incapacitating agents and potential “truth serums.”
- MKDELTA: A sister project to MKUltra, MKDELTA focused on the operational use of various mind control techniques and materials in the field.
- MKSEARCH: This project explored other drugs and techniques, with a specific subproject focusing on testing LSD on unsuspecting individuals in real-life social situations, notably through “Operation Midnight Climax.”
- Stargate Project: Run by the U.S. Army and later the DIA and CIA under different names (like GRILL FLAME and CENTER LANE), this was a project focused on “remote viewing” and psychic phenomena for intelligence gathering, which was eventually shut down in 1995 after being deemed unscientific and unhelpful.
Most of these projects were eventually consolidated or succeeded by MKUltra in 1953. Many records concerning these programs were destroyed in 1973 by order of CIA Director Richard Helms, making a full understanding of their scope and impact difficult.

US history
After the Korean war their was widespread US panic about the brainwashing of troops in Korea. Some military personnel publicly switched sides and were on US television. These military personnel were adamant that they would not return to the US and decided to remain with their captors.
The US starting to look seriously into brainwashing techniques. The theory was that these techniques could be used to create a ‘Manchurian candidate’. It was believed that an unwitting victim could be turned into an assassin by brainwashing. The US discovered that this was not only done with torture and the use of psychology but also technology.
The US started working on radio controlled brain implants. Dr Jose Delgardo began research at Yale University. His first research paper on implanting electrodes was 1952. His experiments were famous and worked on animals and human volunteers. These chips could control movement and emotion by electrical stimulation in different areas of the brain. The experiments were done on a variety of personnel who were accessible for different reasons:
- Military personnel
- Security services personnel – obviously a useful technology to enable spying. Some of the people who were implanted with this early technology were not even necessarily aware that they were spies
- Students and people of high IQ from affiliated universities
- Psychiatric patients
- Prisoners
- Prisoners of war/spies from other countries
The widespread implanting of chips by the CIA and other security services continued through the 1960’s. It included people from the civil rights movement for politically motivated supervision and infiltration. Counter culture individuals were involved due to the discovery of LSD and their threat to the existing social order. Protesters against the government and Vietnam were natural targets for the CIA and FBI.
MK Ultra was part of a set of experiments about brainwashing, torture and control. Olsen and the LSD experiments on security personnel became world news after Olsen’s death leaping (or being pushed) from a hotel window. The family are still seeking justice and the truth. The public exposure of these programmes in the US led to many experiments being denied, then ended officially. The experimental system covertly moved to Canada. Many of the doctors involved were from the US, Canada and Britain.
Canadian history
In the 1970’s projects like MK Utra were discovered being used on Canadian psychiatric patients. They were exploited and exposed to experiments like ‘the sleep room‘ and ‘psychic driving’ to reprogram their memories and personalities. Some patients were seriously damaged and suffered for the rest of their lives. The newspapers and television documentaries exposed this. The Canadian victims and their families have been suing ever since. Some successfully. Many passed away without compensation.
UK history
The various programmes like MK Ultra had become public knowledge in the US and Canada. The UK was therefore ideal. It is English speaking and not a gun culture. There is a high level of British obedience to authority and the secret services due the second world war. The security services and government have little oversight so have kept the programme secret successfully for more than half a century.
The stigma of being accused of mental health issues and the consistent bullying have been enough to deter most public exposure. The security services could simply remove any references to MK Ultra and similar programmes from the media and other publications in the UK. The internet has changed all this. More information is available, some of it heavily monitored by the security services still. However the CIA deliberately destroyed as much evidence as possible in 1973, so there are still limitations to public access to this history.
The US and the British have long standing relationships between academic intuitions. UK research focused on delivery of medical implants. The implants needed accurate delivery systems to avoid brain damage. The implants were sent originally from Dr Delgardo’s experiments at Yale University to companies like Amersham International in Buckinghamshire. Amersham International is a world leader in medical devices and their accurate implantation. Generations of locals were recruited to the project. Amersham International has done much work on DNA since.
The security services value being part of a family group as it means better social control. People are controlled by relationships with other members over generations. Every detail of their life, work and social contacts are monitored. Every walk of life has connections to the family tree. The security services infiltrate at every level of society as part of a larger control mechanism. The need to have ‘eyes on’ leads to a culture of secret surveillance. The British are largely accepting of this culture and have always valued security and defence as being in the national interest.
Only understanding the system can give freedom. Mental freedom, personal identity and having choices are basic human rights.
